FAQ About Ultrasounds

For many years sonography was limited to 2D (2-dimensional) cross-sectional scans through anatomy. Now 2D imaging has been extended into 3D (3-dimensional) scanning and imaging. The 2D mode is the traditional ultrasound mode, usually seen in the doctors office, with a black and white image. The 2D mode is mainly images of the baby’s bones and the fluid. The 2D mode is usually used to see the baby’s gender, and when the baby is younger in age. The 3D mode on the ultrasound machine is the images where you can see the baby’s facial features in the color mode. You will be able to see your baby smile, blink, and yawn. The 3D mode is the mode you use for obtaining the still images in color of your baby’s face. The final mode, the 4D mode, is real time 4D Live Motion Imaging, and it is the continuous three dimensional scanning of the baby. The 4D mode is the mode to obtain the live 3D images in moving form producing a DVD for you to bring home to your friends and family. Keep in mind 2D, 3D and 4D are features/technology on the ultrasound system that produce images. 2D technology is the black/white technology and is used for gender determination and to listen to the baby’s heartbeat. 3D ultrasound produces color still shot pictures. 4D ultrasound , in simple terms, is 3D in movement. So if your baby is sucking his/her thumb, crying, yawning, etc. you will see his/her movements and gestures in the color technology. In order to capture all of this 4D ultrasound movement, you will need to make sure you have chosen a DVD option.

We pride ourselves on being an inviting, relaxing, comfortable, and spacious environment for you and your family. We are also located in up-scale retail locations rather than sterile looking office buildings.

Ultrasound has been used for over 30 years in obstetrics with millions of images produced. Numerous studies and medical research has shown no known adverse side effects when used properly. There is no increase in sound waves used in 3D 4D ultrasound over 2D ultrasound (the mode used in the physician’s office). Our machines are new, and well maintained set with the OB Application in place and with energy limits set by the manufacturer below FDA limits. All of our sonographers have completed the diagnostic ultrasound program and are diagnotstic medical sonographers being either ARMDS licensed or eligible. Our sonographers have completed extensive 3D 4D ultrasound training to provide the safest exam possible and obtain the best photos of your baby. That depends on what you are looking to see. Many mothers like coming in twice, early on, 15-26 weeks, when they can see the baby as a whole, and then again at 25-34 weeks to see a more detailed face. Between 26 and 32 weeks, your baby develops more fat and gets a more defined face. After 34 weeks, it becomes more and more difficult to obtain good pictures since the baby is running out of room. However all babies are different and we have been successful in obtaining great images all the way up to 39 weeks.

No, we do not accept insurance because this is an elective procedure.

At 14 weeks we can determine the gender with a very high accuracy. If you are over 14 weeks and the gender can not be seen, we invite you back for a weekday return appointment and we will rescan you for free within the next 14 days. The need for a return visit is usually due to the baby’s position.

Most doctors recommend maintaining a healthy fluid intake, especially while you are pregnant. This will help to ensure your amniotic fluid is clear as well as full. There are many things out of the sonographer’s control like the baby’s position, the mother’s skin type and build, amount of amniotic fluid, etc.

Drink plenty of water even days before the appointment to ensure your amniotic fluid is clear. About a half hour before your 3D 4D ultrasound scan, try to drink a fruit juice so that your baby will be awake during your session (unless you are told not to by your physician).

Depending on the ultrasound package that you select, your session will last between 10 and 25 minutes. However, plan on spending 30 minutes to an hour at our studio so that we can send you home with memories to last a life time. It is best to arrive a few minutes early to fill out some paperwork.

Yes, of course. You are required to visit a doctor and have a diagnostic medical ultrasound of your fetus prior to visiting our office. Our services are purely for entertainment. We provide only non-diagnostic ultrasounds. A diagnostic medical ultrasound exam with your physician will determine the proper development of the fetus and check for any anomalies. We want to be assured that you are being seen by a licensed physician and getting the proper testing done for you and your baby.
